Svelta, a strong-willed widow, lives alone in a small Bulgarian village close to the Turkish border. One day, in a forest, she encounters an African refugee, Bamba. She reluctantly offers him food and shelter. Bamba comes to learn her language and takes part in her daily life, inspiring Svelta to make momentous choices that trigger a revolt among the local villagers.
