AARP Free Tax Service

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program will run a tax assistance and preparation service at the Grinton I. Will Library of the Yonkers Public Library beginning on February 6 - April 10, 2024. Appointments are available every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. with IRS-trained tax counselors. This service is by appointment only and no walk-ins will be accepted. This service is free, confidential, and available to everyone, regardless of age.  

AARP Tax Preparation FAQ

  • You must EITHER register IN-PERSON at any of the branches of the Yonkers Public Library OR register ONLINE (we cannot take registrations over the phone). Click here to view our calendar of available appointments.

  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.

  • You must complete and bring the packet of forms and documents that you receive when you register to your appointment.  (You can also download and print these forms and documents here.) 
    DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR PREPARATION

  • Your government issued ID or NY State driver's license
  • A copy of the front of your Social Security card
  • Completed Form 13614 C (Intake/Interview & Quality Review Sheet) – included in documents packet (see above).

  • Any letters received from either the IRS or New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

  • Copies of Social Security cards (or ITIN) for taxpayer, spouse, and all dependents to be claimed on tax return.

  • Copy (front and back) of driver’s license or state issued ID card for both taxpayer and spouse.

  • 2022 Federal and State tax returns together with the documents used in their preparation.

  • All applicable supporting documents and forms for the 2023 tax year. The following is a brief listing of those supporting documents:

  • W-2s

  • 1098 Mortgage Statement

  • 1099 R Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc.

  • 1099 INT Interest Income

  • 1099 DIV Dividend Income

  • SSA 1099 Social Security Benefit Statement

  • RRB 1099 Payments by the Railroad Retirement Board

  • 1099 MISC Miscellaneous Income

  • 1099 NEC Non-employee Compensation

  • 1098 T Tuition Statement

  • 1099 B Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions

  • If either you or your spouse obtained health insurance through Obamacare, then a Health Insurance Marketplace Statement (1095 A) is required.

  • If requesting direct deposit for refunds or direct debit for balances due, a voided blank check so that the routing and account numbers can be obtained.

  • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained to help you file a variety of income tax forms and schedules. In certain situations, however, they may be unable to provide assistance. Please check this guide to what Tax-Aide volunteers can and cannot do BEFORE you make an appointment.
