In the summer of 1776, Joseph Plumb Martin enlisted in the Connecticut state militia at the tender age of 15. He later joined General George Washington’s Continental Army and served nearly seven years on behalf of the Revolutionary cause. In 1830, the 70-year-old Martin published a vivid account of his wartime experiences titled A Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Dangers, and Sufferings of a Revolutionary Soldier, based on diaries he kept during the conflict.
This narrative was lost for a century but rediscovered in the 1950s to become an essential firsthand source for historians and researchers on the experiences of the common soldier during the War of Independence.
Now, Peekskill City Historian John Curran guides us through this fascinating chronicle. John is a trustee / vice president of the Peekskill Museum and the author of several books on the history of the Hudson Valley area, including Peekskill's African American History and Images of America: Peekskill.
We look forward to seeing you on October 26!
