Back to School & Learning Resources

Learning Resources for All Ages

As August draws to a close, it can feel hard to say goodbye to summer. The end of summer also marks the beginning of back to school season for many students and a return to learning. Even if you aren’t going back to school this fall, you can still take advantage of the wide variety of online learning resources available to you with your Yonkers Public Library Card. Learning goes far beyond the reading, writing, and arithmetic you might associate with school, and YPL is your go-to resource for new skills, research, and much more.

At the Yonkers Public Library, we want to foster a love of lifelong learning. From kindergarten through college and beyond, we’re here to support every type of student and the teachers who are dedicated to helping them learn.

The Yonkers Public Library will resume Sunday library service at all locations on September 8th.

We offer many services and programs to support students of all ages as well as the educators who teach them. Read on to learn all about them. There’s something for everyone!

For Everyone

Learning extends far beyond the classroom and continues even after we graduate. At YPL, there are many digital resources available to you so you can continue to pursue your interests and learn new things.

You can log in using your library card number found on the back of your library card. Your pin number should be the last four digits of the phone number you provided when you applied for your library card. If you’re having trouble logging in, contact your local library and they can reset your pin number for you.

Gale Courses offers more than 300 instructor-led online courses in a variety of courses in accounting, computer applications, writing and publishing, personal development, and many more.

Mango Languages has courses designed to teach you conversational skills in a variety of languages, as well as offering ESL courses.

Interested in local history or researching your family tree? You can access materials and genealogy resources in-person at the library. Access Ancestry Library Edition in-person at the library. The Yonkers Riverfront Library is a FamilySearch Affiliate Library and offers onsite access to digitized records not available offsite. HeritageQuest Online provides access to primary sources, local and family histories, research guides, interactive census maps, and more.

Don’t forget to take advantage of e-books and audiobooks that you can download to your mobile device or computer. The Libby app offers popular fiction and nonfiction ebooks and audiobooks. Freading is another great option to access fiction and nonfiction ebooks. Hoopla lets you download and stream 10 items per month, including movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, ebooks, and comics and graphic novels.

You can also access documentaries through Kanopy on desktop, mobile, or through a Roku device. Each month, you receive 60 tickets to use. Different films will require a different number of tickets, and the time you are able to access a film will also vary between films.

Class Visits:

Looking to take your students outside of the classroom? The Yonkers Public Library welcomes students of all ages to any of our three library branches. We can tailor your visits to best engage your students. Types of visits include library card orientation and sign-ups, story time, books talks, teen tours and more.

To schedule your visit, you can fill out this class visit form. Forms should be submitted at least four weeks in advance of your desired visit date. Visits should have no more than 60 students, and schools should provide at least one adult chaperone per every ten students.

The Yonkers Public Library offers special library cards to teachers and faculty at Yonkers schools regardless of whether or not they are residents of Yonkers themselves.
