J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most influential authors of the fantasy genre. The epic world of Middle-earth has captured the imagination of readers and writers alike for decades. Perhaps one of the most iconic creations from Tolkien’s world are the hobbits - short, human-like creatures with large, furry feet who live in a place called the Shire.
September 22 is Hobbit Day, a celebration of the birthdays of the two of the main characters in the series, Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Bilbo is the hero of “The Hobbit.” Frodo is the hero of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The day is also very close to the original publication of “The Hobbit” on September 21, 1937.
Since Hobbit Day is a birthday celebration, it’s best to celebrate with food and festivities! You can enjoy food (check out some of these Lord of the Rings inspired recipes), dancing and music. Enjoy the cool, fall weather and enjoy a walk in your neighborhood - there is a notorious amount of walking done by the hobbits on their journeys. You can also take some time to watch the film adaptations or read one of the books, which you can check out from the Yonkers Public Library.
