From Christmas to Halloween, Independence Day to Cinco de Mayo, there exists a wide range of holidays that people love to celebrate. Both niche celebrations like May the 4th (Star Wars Day) and major holidays are recognized by people around the world. Stitch Day takes place on June 26th and is celebrated by Disney fans around the world.
Stitch is the friendly blue alien featured in the 2002 Disney film Lilo and Stitch. The movie is a tale of second chances, self-discovery, and the importance of family (or ohana in Hawaiian). Stitch has become a worldwide icon of friendship and joy and has recently surged in popularity due to the announcement of the live-action version of Lilo and Stitch, set to be released in 2024. Stitch’s holiday takes place on June 26th (6/26) because he was developed as “Experiment 626” in an alien laboratory.
Here are some fun ways to celebrate 6/26 at home:
- Watch Lilo and Stitch, streaming on Disney+ or available on dvd at your local library.
- Check out Stitch-themed books from the children’s room. Stitch doesn’t have to stay within the silver screen. YPL has a wide variety of illustrated Lilo and Stitch children’s books to be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
- Enjoy Hawaiian food and culture by throwing your very own luau! Ideas for a Stitch-themed luau can be found here.
- Visit the Crestwood Library to celebrate our community ohana. Activities will be available during normal operating hours (10am-5pm).
Can't make it into the library? We are encouraging families of all types to share your Ohana on social media with photos and videos showcasing what makes your family unique. Use the hashtags #YPL #ShareYourOhana
