Summer Olympics 2024 with YPL

The Summer Olympics in Paris begin this Friday, July 26th. The Olympics are chock full of physical feats from some of the best athletes from around the world. When you watch the swimmers, gymnasts, and runners, do you marvel at their physical ability? Maybe you wonder what it would be like to compete at that kind of level?

There are plenty of Westchester athletes competing in the Paris Olympics this year. Raj Benjamin is a Mount Vernon native who won silver in the 400m hurdles in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Sam Coffey played for the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry and will be playing midfield on the US Women’s Soccer team. Kate Douglass is a Pelham High graduate and has more than twenty medals from world swimming competitions.

Don’t worry, Yonkers has brought home Olympic medals, too! Lea Loveless Maurer brought home the bronze medal for swimming in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Check out a clipping from the paper below!

If you want to cheer on some of the many local athletes competing in the Olympics this year, join us at Crestwood for the 2024 Summer Olympics Opening Watch Party from 1:30 PM to 4:45 PM. Snacks will be provided.

Maybe it doesn’t win Olympic gold, but reading is a triumph of its own! From Summer Reading to 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, we are always encouraging patrons of all ages to reach their reading goals. In the spirit of the Olympics, we encourage you to dip into some popular reads like the NYT 100 Best Books of the 21st Century, NPR’s 2023 Book Picks, or our own YPL Staff Picks. How many have you read? How many will you read? Challenge yourself to see how many titles you can read in these next two weeks during the Olympics.
