Breathe in the Sky: Photographs by Hasna Muhammad

Breathe In the Sky is a solo show featuring the photographs of Hasna Muhammad, the daughter of renowned artists and civil rights activists, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. Hasna Muhammad’s work spans many yearsand captures personal and public memories, moments, and events. This exhibit is curated by Haifa Bint-Kadi.
Hasna Muhammad’s strikingly poignant photography includes images from four collections. Final Days (recently exhibited at Sarah Lawrence College) shares some of the personal, ceremonial, and farewell after-death rituals for loved ones including her parents.The streetscapes and people of Harlem come alive in Harlem Before My Eyes. My Life with Guitars allows a glimpse into her personal sphere, and her poetic view of the world is seen in Breathe In the Sky.
Hasna Muhammad is a visual artist, writer, and educator whose work focuses on family, social justice, education, and the human condition. Her work has been exhibited across the United States, and she recently published her first book, Breathe In the Sky: Poems Prayers & Photographs (BirthmarkMedia, 2023). She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and completed her M.A. and Ed.D. at Teachers College, Columbia University. Hasna Muhammad is a 2018-2019 Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Fellow, a 2022 Moth Storyteller, and a member of the Harlem Writer’s Guild.
